Transformation Starts with You
Personal leadership is where true transformation begins. By starting with ourselves, we can make the most meaningful impact on our world. The journey to personal leadership begins with understanding our core values, recognizing our strengths, and building reverberating habits. This sequence forms the foundation of effective leadership, allowing us to grow intentionally and inspire others.
Understanding and articulating your core values is critical to personal leadership. Many people struggle to communicate their values because it feels overwhelming to define what truly matters. However, resources like the Barrett Values Centre or the VIA Character Strengths Survey can help you quickly assess and clarify your core values. This foundation is essential because it guides your decisions, shapes your character, and provides a sense of direction. When we align our actions with our core values, we lead with authenticity and integrity. Once core values are established, we can move to the next operational level of personal leadership: recognizing our strengths.
Understanding your strengths is key to thriving in both personal and professional life. The CliftonStrengths assessment (formerly StrengthsFinder) is a great place to start discovering your strengths, but there are also many other online resources available. Operating within our strengths allows us to engage in work that feels natural and fulfilling. When our strengths align with our core values, we find a sense of purpose and fulfillment that drives us to excel. This alignment sets the stage for building habits that further amplify our capabilities.
Much of what we do every day is governed by our habits. Changing habits can lead to outsized impacts on our lives. The best way to build effective, resonating habits is by aligning the outcomes with our core values and leveraging our strengths. This approach ensures that our habits not only stick but also serve our long-term growth. Charles Duhigg's book The Power of Habit provides excellent insights into how habits work and how to develop better habits to achieve our goals. By understanding the science of habit formation and connecting it to what matters most to us, we create lasting positive change.
Personal leadership can be understood through a strategic, operational, and tactical lens. Strategically, it begins with defining our core values, which set our vision and purpose. Operationally, it involves recognizing and harnessing our strengths, enabling us to operate effectively and fulfill our potential. Tactically, it requires building and maintaining habits that align with our values and strengths, allowing us to take consistent action toward our goals. By mastering these three aspects, we lead ourselves with clarity, intention, and impact.
